Shear band formation and ductility in nanotwinned Cu
نویسنده
چکیده
The ductility and plastic flow behavior of highly aligned nanotwinned copper produced by interrupted magnetron sputtering is investigated. Tensile tests were performed at various strain rates at both room and liquid nitrogen (77 K) temperatures. Higher ductility and strength are reported for all samples tested at 77 K. The observed inhomogeneous deformation and shear band propagation are discussed as functions of the testing temperature, decreasing heat capacity at 77 K and low initial dislocation density, which leads to a yield peak. 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. The Effect of Temperature on the Fracture Surface Morphology and Ductility of La55Al25Ni5Cu10Co5 BMG
In this research, the effect of temperature on the mean size of fracture surface features, as well as the relation between fracture surface morphologies and ductility of a La-based BMG as a relatively brittle alloy, was systematically investigated. After producing the alloy, three-point bending experiments, over a wide range of temperatures, were conducted on the samples; then the fracture surf...
متن کاملEvading the strength–ductility trade-off dilemma in steel through gradient hierarchical nanotwins
The strength-ductility trade-off has been a long-standing dilemma in materials science. This has limited the potential of many structural materials, steels in particular. Here we report a way of enhancing the strength of twinning-induced plasticity steel at no ductility trade-off. After applying torsion to cylindrical twinning-induced plasticity steel samples to generate a gradient nanotwinned ...

We have developed a mechanism-based plasticity model of nanotwinned metals to investigate the effect of twin spacing on strength, ductility and work hardening rate of such materials. In particular, the unique roles of dislocation pile-up zones near twin and grain boundaries, as well as twinning partial dislocations, in strengthening and work hardening are incorporated in the model. Competition ...
متن کاملTwin-size effects on the deformation of nanotwinned copper
The strength and ductility of nanolayered materials are determined by a delicate balance between dislocation and interface motion under applied mechanical loading. We present here studies of dislocation and interface motion in single crystal and nanotwinned copper, utilizing molecular dynamics simulations. Motion of twin boundary interfaces themselves is dictated by the stress state at the inte...

The optimality of nanotwinned structures in imparting maximum strength and stability has been investigated by performing atomistic simulations of dislocation interactions with various types of grain boundaries. By developing an understanding of the mechanism of the instability, we predict that nanocrystalline metals with grain sizes below 50 ± 10 nm or 70 ± 10 nm (in Cu) are inherently unstable...
